But above all, it is Christoph Weyers’ innovative and imaginative production design that establishes the framework in which the multi-faceted events unfold. With astonishing scene changes, time and again the internationally-renowned set designer creates new spaces and visions, and, just when we might think that all theatrical methods and tricks have been exhausted, Weyers surprises us yet again with breathtaking moments of magic. For example, when, before our very eyes, the Shah’s glittering palace appears as if transported directly from One Thousand and One Nights. And not forgetting how Weyers displays his masterful skill in the use of lighting and projection…Bravo!

The Physician – The Power of Knowledge, of Medicine, of Love and of Musicals

The audience experience is heightened by Christoph Weyers’ set design, the zenith being reached, quite logically, in the scenes from within the Shah’s palace, established here by the two monumental relief sculptures of the period, the Persian carpets and the pastel-toned lighting. Weyers achieves the desired 3-D effect through his use of projection, backdrops and latticed scenery; this lends the stage more depth and allows the space to engage the imagination of the audience.

The Physician – Having Talent and Ability

Christoph Weyers’ set design is once again an artistic achievement of the highest order. His use of projection is excellent. The unified pattern of the projections, his signature evident in the images displayed, is especially worthy of mention. Weyers excels in the macro-details, in the palace of the Shah, for example, but he is also in control of the micro-details, nothing is missed: the strapping used to keep the boxes in place on the handcart, the various bunches of herbs and other small touches throughout the scenes. Nor is there any fault to be found in the colour palette or the design.

moving on from the adaptation, the team from the City Theatre did a first-class job, especially with the costumes, props and scenery. Set design for The Physician was by Christoph Weyers, who has already provided spectacular designs for previous City Theatre musical productions such as Titanic, Nine and Snow White. He certainly knows how to create an impressive spectacle, and this was no exception. In particular, the scenes of medieval London and the Shah of Persia’s palace caught the eye.

It has been a long time since the audience in this auditorium has seen such a colourful, resplendent and magnificent set design as the one created here by Christoph Weyers, with the help of his efficient team. As a member of the audience, you really felt as if you yourself were a guest in the sumptuous palace of the Shah, where, among other things, a large chessboard on the ground drew one’s gaze, upon which women from the harem gracefully moved the pieces on the instruction of the ruler. Following the hero on his journey to his long-dreamed-of and noble goal kept the audience captivated from beginning to end. In large part due to the cleverly designed set, there was not a single moment of the production that dragged.

Having experienced many productions at the City Theatre in recent years featuring minimalistic sets, Christoph Weyers full-blown, spectacular scenic design filled me with joy.
