The best thing about the Brno production is Christoph Weyers’ industrial-style set, which is complemented by flexible backdrops that are able to draw the audience into several different milieus in a stylised way. A decidedly perfect treat are the background projections, which perfectly underscore the action and its atmosphere, especially through the ocean, ship and shipyard...

 ...Director Stanislav Moša’s production succeeds brilliantly in conveying the atmosphere of a decaying suburb, which has long since left its best days behind, and where people have to fight for their place every day. Chrisoph Weyers’ set design makes an outstanding contribution, managing to capture the industrial character of the city and its withered beauty with the suggestion of tantalising adventures at sea. The set changes happen quickly, making for a brisk pace in the production...

Sting’s musical has arrived in Brno with elegance

 ...Director Stanislav Moša, together with set designer Christoph Weyers, has created a bombastic, but by no means overdone show. The set simulates the size of the shipyards full of cranes, reminiscent of “primeval, mindlessly grazing monstrosities”, as Sting later writes. Weyers works with lifting platforms, so that Gideon’s flat, for example, rises from the recess, while the heavy shipyard gate is simultaneously lowered from above. The projections also lend movement to the production, where the ocean waves rage, the spray splashes up to the sky, clouds pass by or, at the end, that last ship actually steams away on the horizon...

...The continental European premiere, which is supposed to serve as a model for other theatres – yes, the Brno City Theatre has that kind of reputation – turned out excellently. The stage design is by Christoph Weyers, where one image follows the next in an imaginative way. The scenes that virtually exude the smell of sweat, beer and cheap whisky and the magnificent projections complement the stage design in a harmonious way...
